Resources

Some artists think that art should sell itself. Often gallery artists have that attitude. They feel that they have a beautiful gallery to show the work and that is enough.

In the fantasy world they are right. In the real world they are naive indeed. Art is seldom sold at random. In my long career, rarely have I sold to strangers who know nothing about me or my work.
Relationships are so important with collectors. Trust and friendship are built over time, even if you have never met in person. I have many collectors I’ve not met, but we become friends through others or similar interests in real time, or online.
Missing small opportunities to build trust is a mistake.  For example, I put a note of thanks on the back of my gallery shown paintings for those who purchase my work. I can’t be there to thank them in person but they know I am grateful. I have often received comments later that the collector loves my message.  I also put collector comments on my website pages. They help me to build trust with future collectors who don’t know me. These little extra efforts help me in so many ways, including building friendships. Galleries would be wise to use these little ideas for their artists to build good will.
This country painter loves my friends and I love to get testimonials….
